Hello friends,
Thanks for reading The Quest, your weekly round-up of tips and insights to help you design and lead exceptional online sessions that your group members will love.❤️
Today I want to share my key takeaways with you from the most meaningful experience I’ve designed yet: my mom’s celebration of life.✨
Because whether you are planning a gathering to honour someone you love, these lessons might spark some ideas that stick with you.
Let’s jump right in!
I’ve designed my fair share of celebrations.
One of the perks of being in the “experience design” business is knowing how to sprinkle a little magic into family gatherings and special occasions.
I had never designed anything quite like this.
I faced my biggest and most daunting design challenge yet: designing my mom Joan’s celebration of life. It might sound unusual—and maybe even a little heavy—but my mom actually helped plan it.
My mom was in a rare position of knowing she didn’t have much time left.
In October she was diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer that was beyond treatment. But instead of shying away from the inevitable, she embraced it with her characteristic resilience, grace, and a fearless heart.
My mom was a master gatherer.
Her greatest joy came from bringing people together – family, friends, and even strangers. She loved to dream with others about how to make the world a better place.
When it came to her celebration of life, she had a vision.
She didn’t want a somber affair. She wanted a joyful gathering that inspired people to make a difference with the one short life we all have.
She added her signature touch: surprises.
On what would be her last night, she talked to her friend and piano teacher Matt. She convinced him to lead a sing along of “We are the World” at the event.
And it was extraordinary.
400 of her close friends and family gathered to honour her. We shared photos and heard moving tributes – including from 6 of her grandchildren. And yes, we sang together.
My mom’s celebration of life wasn’t just about honoring her.
For days after, we were flooded with messages from people saying how inspired they felt. Not just by the event itself – but by the example my mom set in how she lived and loved.
The celebration of life was full of life-changing lessons.
I’ve been thinking about the event ever since—trying to distill down the lessons my mom taught me about designing a truly memorable experience – and how to live a good life.
Here are 10 life-changing lessons I learned from my mom👇
1/ Start with the Feeling
She wanted a “joyous” event, and that intention shaped every decision we made.
2/ The Space Sets the Tone
She chose a light, airy space that felt uplifting, proving that the right environment can shape the energy of a gathering.
3/ Engage Everyone
Her group sing-along brought 400 people together, both in the room and on Zoom. It was a moment of shared joy and connection.
4/ Make Connecting Easy
My mom loved introducing people, so we included name tags to help guests connect effortlessly—a small detail that made a big difference.
5/ Embrace the Unknown
She didn’t know if the sing-along would work, but she wasn’t afraid to try.
6/ Take Meaningful Risks
By being her quirky authentic self, she was willing to be vulnerable. And that helped others open up.
7/ Don’t Overplan.
She left room for spontaneity and chaos, knowing that’s where the magic happens.
8/ Re-imagine What’s Possible.
She opted out the idea of a “traditional” funeral and designed a one-of-a-kind event that reflected her spirit.
9/ It’s About the People
The celebration wasn’t just about her—it was about the good times, adventures, and impact she shared with others.
10/ Ask “Why Not?”
My mom was a trailblazer and a rule-breaker right to the end. Her motto was simple: “Why not?” (Thanks to my brother Mike for that one!).
I can’t think of a greater gift than these life lessons. Joan will be deeply missed. But her legacy of love, joy, and connection will live on. ✨
