🌟The Quest #99: How to Leverage the Power of Community

Greetings from Toronto❄️where I am celebrating a big award for my 82-year-old mom.🏅More on that below👇

🙌Many thanks for reading The Quest, your weekly round-up of tips and insights to help you design and lead exceptional virtual sessions that your group members will love.❤️

🌟Few people have taught me more about how to leverage the power of community than my 82-year-old mother, Joan.

Growing up our house was always filled with people. Neighbors brainstorming ways to fundraise for new playground equipment for our local park. Families dropping off books for the school book drive. And kids running rampant without a lot of parental supervision (it was the 70s 😅).

My mom knows the power of convening a community for a shared purpose.

What seemed to me like (fun) chaos throughout my childhood was part of my mom’s way of getting things done. She knew that a group of people could accomplish way more than each individual on their own. Together they could pool their diverse experiences and resources for a greater purpose. And that the outcome would be way better.

Leveraging our collective intelligence is how we come up with better solutions.

Now more than ever it’s a skill we need to come up with new ideas and innovations. And there are many ways to leverage the power of community for learning, creating, and collaboration. Whether you host, facilitate, lead, or teach online or in-person it’s the key to scaling your impact.

How do you leverage the power of community? That’s our Quest for this week🔎

💫10 Co-created Reasons to Take a Community-Powered Learning Approach

A Twitter thread by my collaborator, MySnapshot founder, learning expert (and Quest reader!) Charlotte Crowther with 10 reasons to take a Community-Powered Learning approach as a learner or instructor.

What makes this thread extra compelling is that it was co-created with her community. Instead of spouting off her expertise on the topic (and she’s got a ton), she invited people to engage in debate and contribute their ideas. Here’s the result👇

The conversation it sparked was mind-blowing. 10 co-created reasons to take a Community-Powered Learning approach as a learner or instructor: pic.twitter.com/v2C0reXxTWVideo or Gif October 31st 2022 34 Retweets 155 Likes

🥦Leveraging the Power of Community to Build in Public

Charlotte’s thread is a stellar example of how to leverage the power of community to build ideas in public.

When I started my journey as an online creator over two years ago I had never heard of “building in public”.

Then I started following Building in Public Masterycourse creator, Kevon Cheung on Twitter. I learned that it’s how creators test ideas, develop products, and build a community around their work.

By openly and transparently testing your ideas on social media you build trust with your audience. And you find out what your audience really wants. It’s helped me write a better newsletter, improve my online course and come up with fresh ideas.

If you want to get better at building in public then Kevon is your guy.

I was bursting with pride this week when my mom received the Order of Ontario Award for her lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on communities (that’s what happens when you put in the reps 💪).
