🤷How do you learn facilitation?
That’s a question that I get a lot.
Learning facilitation 15 years ago was one of the best decisions I have made.
I have learned profound lessons about leadership, learning, and groups. It’s opened up new professional opportunities. And I believe that facilitation has helped me to become a better person.
I have learned that there is no one pathway to learning facilitation.
It took me a while to find mine. I have done a lot of figuring out as I went along. And I have made a lot of mistakes along the way.
I realized that 7 key things accelerated my learning.
I want to share them with you so you have a compass to find your pathway more quickly.
So how do you learn facilitation when there is no set path?
That’s our Quest for this week🔎

🧭7 Ways I Learned Facilitation (so you can learn it more quickly)
I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I launch the next cohort of Breakthrough Facilitation.
And I realized 7 things have accelerated my learning.
Here they are:
1/ I trained. I took my first facilitation training 15 years ago. It gave me a framework that I still use in every session I lead.
2/ I learned from seasoned facilitators. They have shown me what exceptional facilitation looks like so I have something to strive for in my practice.
3/ I practiced. I have put in thousands of hours facilitating in-person and online. There is no shortcut here.
4/ I hired a facilitation coach. My coach (the incredible Nadia Chaney) gave me specific feedback on the areas I needed to improve. This is something I wish I would have done earlier.
5/ I read books. Here are 10 of my favorites.
6/ I listened to podcasts. Here are 5 I have learned from.
7/ I poured through toolkits. They give me ideas and inspiration for things to try out in my sessions. My favorites are Hyper Island, IDEO Creative Tips and Tools, Session Lab’s library, and Toolsi.
